Cars - and how I keep mine running....
I'll be the first to admit, i know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about cars, and the care of cars, except for the old saying "take your car in to get oil changed every 3k miles"....which apparently is no longer the case....i've been running on the same oil for like 5k miles and still don't need to change it.
anyhow, yesterday my brake pad light came on so i took my car in today to the dealership (which is where i always take my car...cept this time at Auto Mall instead of East Bay since it's right down the street from work) for a service and to get a brake pad inspection....so...$30 for inspection, and if they need to change them out...which i'm sure they will...it will be about $1300 + tax....ugh...
there goes more bonus money, eh?
at least they let me take a mercedes out for the day (damn, that thing is powerful...) and i didn't get a junk car or anything....hahahaha
UPDATE:
so got a call from the dealership and my car won't be ready until monday....so i get the mercedes for a couple more days..more things to repair than expected...they need to repair front rotors & sensors, replace front brake pads, repair the leaking powersteering lines, i have a missing plastic piece under the left hand side of the bumper (they say it directs air flow to the brakes?), need to replace wipers (which i know i should have done sooner) and replace rear tires...total is $1800 + tax...

if im not mistaken, the E39 (your car) has a 15,000 mi oil change interval...so not changing it after a long while isn't that big of a deal especially since you run it every day.
1300 for a "full" brake job is reasonable for that car. even if you go to an indy - it will only save you 100-200 anyway.
i know its hard to feel good about spending that kind of dough...but its a great car!
yeah i have to say i do love my car :) it's reliable and i don't have any problems with it which is nice...AND my A/C works which is very nice since it's hella hot now. lol i was actually thinking that it would cost even more to get my brakes fixed...but it's only brake pads as far as i know...is that normal?
i'm also getting an estimate on getting the hood repainted cuz i noticed that there are a couple big holes in the paint from rocks...ugh...if only i could just cover it in bubblewrap when i drive and not look dumb...hahahahaha
Whoa...for 1300 i was thinking it was brake pads and rotors. if its just brake pads, then it should be 4-500 tops.
if the holes are smaller than 1/4" then i say use touch up paint. ~$25 at the dealer. Otherwise to get your hood resprayed should run ~2-300.
better yet...you know what I would do if I were in your shoes? hee-hee
what? get a new car? hahahahahahaha
hahahah exactly!
btw..1800 for all that work sounds about right...and it sounds like the right timing considering the mileage you have on it. so i hope you dont feel about it all...cuz all of that is minor :)
man....minor sounds like alot of money to me...i'm scared about what major will be...lol
